The determinants of urban and rural poverty in Tunisia

Samir Ghazouani and Mohamed Goaied

Abstract
Analysis of poverty has always aroused the interest of researchers, public authorities and international organizations. The aim was to elaborate appropriate strategies and to establish the necessary means in order to eradicate this flail. The specificities of developing economies, in particular the dualism between urban and rural areas, incite to identify the determinants of poverty taking into account the clear distinction that must appear either in the analysis of poverty or during the adoption of appropriate economic policies. The objective is to determine the potential factors of poverty and to evaluate their impact on the level of the households’ welfare. A particular interest will be given to econometric methodology which is concerned with the analysis of panel data with limited dependent variable models. The nature of the available statistical information (survey data) suggests the adoption of random effects Logit and Probit models where the double dimension concerns the observation of individuals grouped into clusters. This type of specification allows the dissociation of a uniform behaviour from the specific effects of the clusters offering the possibility to seize possible differences at the level of standards of living between the households of different clusters.
